Dying to Be in Wonderland

If there is a story that has fascinated me since childhood, that is Alice in Wonderland. There is so much hype about Tim Burton‘s version of the story and suddenly the media is flooded with images of the new flick, fashion shoots are inspired by it, and more interpretations of the Lewis Carroll original appear each day.

One version of Wonderland I particularly loved was by Gwen Stefani in her first solo single, What You Waiting For. I loved the concept, the different characters she includes, and the dreamy atmosphere of the video.  Galliano was responsible for the stunning clothes. The idea behind the video was to portray Stefani’s lack of inspiration and how she finds her muses in the Harajuku Girls living in Wonderland. The video is a mini-movie in itself and worth re-watching over and over again. To see it click here.

Tim Burton‘s movie has already been premiered and can be watched in 3D. I just cannot wait to see it. Pictured below is Anne Hathaway as the White Queen.

And pictured below, her arrival at the London premiere wearing Vivienne Westwood

UPDATE: fellow blogger Retro Chick attended a special screening of the film and has written a very complete and interesting review that we simply must share with all of you. To read her post click here.

Shoe of the Week – Topshop

Words cannot express how much we covet these shoes. This pair of fantastic suede peep-toe wedges from Topshop simply have to be ours. Pay day could not come any faster…

Whilst browsing fellow blog Trendencias we spotted the same stunning wedges walking around  London Fashion Week and now we just want to grab a pair. They look fantastic with some black tights, and we can picture ourselves wearing them with some jeans we bought yesterday.

Fashion Is No Little Girl’s Game

Ahh the world of fashion. Catwalk shows, trips to Milano, NY, glamorous Paris.  High heels, sequined dresses, the beautiful people. It seems to be all luxury and beauty, but when you take a closer look at what’s hidden behind the staged show, things change.

I for one, work in fashion, and can tell you a little about the long hours, the tough days and mostly, how demanding, both physically and mentally, styling the world is. And, as this post’s title claims, it is not a game for little girls, mainly because…

Little girls cannot endure 10 hours a day standing in our heels. Whether it is following customers around a boutique carrying their chosen clothes, whether it is running around trying to organise a fashion show as an unpaid fashion student, whether it is as a stylist’s personal assistant walking the streets with a close-to-impossible shopping list.

Little girls would not cope with demanding clients, shouting at them because a style/item/size is no longer available.

Little girls will simply cry at the sight of their broken nails, suffering when their feet are in excruciating pain, weep when their throats swell due to low temperatures in stock rooms, warehouses or workshops.

Little girls would despair, little girls would suffer, little girls wouldn’t do what we do.

This is for all the fashion students in their work placements, for all the shop assistants working late in a crowded store, for all the personal assistants struggling to find the stylish item of the day, for the lonely model trying to heal her feet before the next show. It may not be an easy world, but I choose to endure it, and for that, me and every single guy/girl working in this industry should be hugely proud. It’s war out here in fashion, but man don’t we rock it.

NY Fashion Week Was About…

Another fashion week goes by. Socialites, celebrities, muses, models and labels are leaving skyscrapers and designer cupcakes behind, in favour of London and its afternoon tea, a city immersed in the mourning of a missing legend. However, before we get to that, what has NY left us with? Well, there are some staples that stay, like leopard prints (hooray!) floral themes, many tributes to femininity, and a clear nod to luxury and colour, with fabrics and trimmings in velvet and fur (hopefully fake). The Big Depression is forgotten.

Some of our highlights are:

Marc Jacobs (Picture by Seth Wenig/AP via Times Online)

This collection didn’t disappoint. Extremely chic in its use of grey, some kind of military, and at times quite brave with its use of floaty transparencies. Full of the above-mentioned trimmings in velvet and fur, also on accessories – An example of how designers are leaving depressing looks behind in favour of a return to glamour and luxury.

The return of Boho-Chic by Ralph Lauren (picture via coutorture.com) and Anna Sui

Ralph Lauren’s collection saw the return on boho chic, and we loved it. Flower prints are still key after a couple of years of strong presence. Trousers are long, so are dresses, layering takes over yet again. Anna Sui also had busy prints as main protagonist for her collection, all colourful and within a maze of fabrics. Again very boho. We looooove this.

Minimalism by Calvin Klein, simplicity in desings, interesting textures, quite futuristic.

There was a powerful British presence  with Victoria Beckham’s collection being loved by critics and fashion editors, colourful and inspired in Dick Tracy (picture via Times Online)

… and Alexa Chung debuting her collaboration with Madewell, with friends like Daisy Lowe and the Geldof sisters adding some Brit style to the coveted front row seats (Picture via Trendencias and Zimbio)

St. Valentine Puppy Love – Dutchypuppy

Yesterday I went to Maastricht. Just one hour drive from Brussels, this Dutch town is not only historically rich and quite pretty, it is also fantastic to shop. In one of The Sting stores we came accross a line of tops by Dutchypuppy, prompting us to make a loving gesture (seeing as it was St Valentine’s today).

Dutchypuppy is an organisation “supporting dog charities around the world, caring for unloved and neglected dogs”. By buying one of their pieces of clothing you too can support this beautiful cause. I went for the “I love dogs” logo, with shiny rhinestones.

We also very much liked the dress pictured below.

This is definitively fashion with a heart, and we had to share it with all of you. To find out more about Dutchypuppy click here.

A Genius Has Left Us Too Soon – RIP Alexander McQueen

Pure, untamed, beautiful, strong, poignant and mostly courageous talent. A genius, an extravagant and colourful engine moving the fashion world forward. He will be forever loved and missed by Fashion Limbo and the rest of the world.

Long live Armadillo shoes, forever strong shall the low cut “bumster” trouser reign, diamond clad skulls may always be worn…A legend is born, RIP Alexander McQueen.

Some Manbags for Spring

We already wrote a post  about manbags and how much we love them. They are becoming increasingly popular, and now one of my friends is looking for a sort of “smallish” bag to carry his wallet, sunglasses, iPod, mobile, and a whole other set of things we couldn’t even figure… but we are not judging, so here are some of our picks.

.
Knomo are a London-based company offering stylish bags for every use: laptop carriers, luggage bags, iPod cases, etc. The Stirling bag pictured above, in chocolate brown, comes in other shades and would cost you around €139. We love Knomo‘s range, their site is easy to navigate and their catalogue is so extensive you are bound to find something you like. Additionally, someone we know bought a laptop case from them and was greatly pleased with it. We are actually thinking about grabbing this beauty… ok, ok, back to manbags!
If you would rather go designer, D&G; have a cute Mini Messenger Bag.

We love the one below by Diesel.

Fossil also have quite an extensive range, in leather and other fabrics. We particularly like the Jackson Citybag, pictured below.

Mags Go Brit Cool

We haven’t been buying many fashion magazines lately, in an attempt to pace ourselves with our obsession with style. However, with Internet, one is never truly disconnected from anything, and we could not help but notice some really great covers.

British Vogue went for Alexa Chung, cool face in television, favoured by many fashion bloggers, and beloved by so many boys… We loved how her look works as a quick update on what’s to come: the continuing reign of the white shirt plus tux jacket combo, the return of clogs (yay! we couldn’t be more excited) and more-ripped-than-ever jeans.

Elle went for another famous brit, Keira Knightley, and a similar look, though less girl next door, and more glammed up. We love Keira, and hate all the criticism she gets for being either too thin, or too this or too that. We do like her, and although this pose seems a tad forced, we love her look and like her taste in fashion.

And as everything cannot be Brit cool, Teen Vogue has the Aussie girl of the moment, Mia Wasikowska, star of the film we cannot wait to see, Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland. The cover couldn’t be more dreamy with Mia wearing Burberry Prorsum.
