My Favourite Shop in Nolita NY – OME

One of the greatest discoveries during my trip to New York was Nolita, a small area in Soho, Lower Manhattan, full of quirky fashion stores and nice little restaurants. If you happen to walk through this part of The City, you must visit OME, an atomic dose of colour and fashion boldness.

I noticed pretty much immediately how New Yorkers like grey, and how only the bravest fashionistas around Soho favour certain colourful designs. Contrary to what Sex and The City makes us believe, there are no Carrie Bradshaws running around. If you see yourself as a “one of a kind” fashionista, OME is surely worth checking out.

Maria, the charming shop owner, customises other labels’ pieces by cleverly hand painting or attaching pretty appliques. She also has her own original creations on display, handmade hats, fascinators with glittery beads and seriously covetable belts.

Dresses are dreamy, truly romantic and full of colour. Accessories are fun and one of a kind.
Shall I show you what I bought at OME? The gorgeous purple dress pictured below is the first thing I picked up. It is terribly soft and comfortable, with a beaded applique on the top part and pockets to contribute to its easy feeling. The grey and golden shirt is an original piece, hand painted and again, very comfortable.

I adored the vibe in this little shop, the colours and fabrics, Maria’s warm welcome and her fresh approach to fashion. I fell in love with Nolita and Elizabeth Street pretty fast, OME just added to the infatuation.

On Great Food – NY Style

One of the things I have brought back with me from my NYC trip is a cute bulging belly. I just couldn’t avoid it. It is not that the cuisine there is particularly exquisite, it’s simply that you can eat anything you like, any time of the day!

I began by pretending to stay healthy with sushi. Yet the sushi was too delicious to eat just a little and in not-so-small portions. Cocktails to wash it down left me happy and feeling light. On the second day, after a gorgeous organic breakfast around Soho, it loomed on me that if I wanted to wear my beloved Topshop bodycon around New York, this could not be delayed: my belly would be petite no more in just a few hours. So, rule number one when visiting the Big Apple – if like me you have an appetite, avoid fitted clothing and give in to the good stuff.

My recommendations? For great Japanese food, a fantastic loud atmosphere and a very retro vibe, head to Kenka, located in the East Village. You simply cannot go wrong with this one. It is fun, inexpensive and the food is pretty tasty. We loved the waiters’ t-shirts so much we headed to the store upstairs (a pretty bizarre place!) and bought some for ourselves. Pictured below: Moi pretty content at Kenka, wearing a Custo cardigan purchased that same day.

Another thing I was happy not to miss were the cupcakes. I obviously went to Magnolia (sinful treats pictured below) and was not disappointed. The funniest thing were the Sex And The City tour buses parked outside picking up some girls high on sugar, wearing impressive stilettos. I also tasted the Baked By Melissa mini-cupcakes, at their little location in Soho, at a dollar each, a must (the mint-chocolate ones are simply blissful).

And one thing New Yorkers do brilliantly is brunch. If only I could do this every weekend!! I loved Public, in my beloved Nolita, too delicious, too cool to miss. Great atmosphere on a Sunday morning, the menu is mouth-watering and the passion fruit mimosas too good to pass. The service was a bit chaotic that day, but the staff are all very friendly, just don’t go there in a rush. Brunch is to be enjoyed slowly and with good company.

I Gotta New York Feeling

I only got in from New York yesterday! That’s what I keep telling myself every time my brain starts to contemplate going back to work, re-decorating my flat, thinking of the summer ahead. And I repeat this sentence as life can so easily push you forward into daily responsibilities without allowing you to enjoy the memories. Because, my dearest dears, that is what one must do after a holiday – take an extra day off and reflect on the good stuff. We never know when reality will make it all vanish into oblivion with a sharp slap in the face.

I have so much to reflect upon, I decided I would do it here and share it all with you, so I hope you don’t mind the NY rant. I will be writing about the best shops, best bars, the best burger ever (!!!) and some other musings.

I will begin with a simple tip on how to beat jet lag – yes, I managed to keep that horrid sickening feeling well away by one simple action: not eating on the plane. I may have not succeeded at getting a good night sleep during the flight (I never do, let’s face it), but by avoiding the airline meals I somehow re-adjusted my internal clock just in time to fly into Europe early morning and have breakfast, like the rest of guys in this part of the world.

I will leave you now, I have so much to unpack.
