Stress and Life – Eating habits

Oh, I could so eat the entire bakery right now

To continue with my online diary on stress management, this post is about eating habits. How stress affects my stomach.

It makes me want to eat my dog – ok, that’s a tad exaggerated, but anxiety does make me hungry and always for the wrong stuff: chocolate, cake, cheese, pizza, you name it. What I do with food -as the more I deny myself the pleasure, the least satisfied I will be with anything- is compromise.

  • If I see I may overdo it with chocolate, I go for the pure good stuff. Nothing below %70 cocoa. It’s not only healthier and good for your heart and blood, it will fill you up faster, and will cut the craving sooner too, so you don’t end up swallowing an entire bar.
  • I also drink lots of tea (fruit tea) every time I feel like snacking between meals.
  • Sometimes I go for a cup of coffee, although caffeine isn’t the best ally when your nerves are at a mighty high, but the smell and warmth of it slows me down and fills my belly, so decaff is definitively the way to go. Hot chocolate also helps.
  • I discover new and complicated recipes. I make something fancy or out of the ordinary, anything that will take me quite a while to prepare. The smells and tasting the food as I cook means I won’t overfill my plate. Want to see what really helped me stay focused this week? This delicious quiche. I served with with plenty of salad, so the portion was small for my huge appetite, but it filled me up.
Pancetta, mushrooms, tuna, spring onions, pecorino and whatever I had left over in the fridge!

Eating habits and stress become very intertwined in exam periods, travelling and moving, job hunting and other hectic times. Tell me, how do you cope?

  1. omnomnom I want to make that quiche now! I usually don't like em that much but I really like the ingredients you used.I don't get hungry per se if I'm stressing out, but I eat when I'm absentminded – a lot. I just love putting food in my mouth, what can I say :Dand wow, malaga, awesome!! I love the south of spain! I visited malaga the one time my family went on a vacation to spain, so beautiful 🙂

  2. I'm a bit of a stress eater myself! I try to make up for it by only allowing myself 1 bad thing a day (so if I'm craving nachos I'll make a giant plate of them for dinner but then it's a breakfast of oatmeal and fruit and a lunch of fresh veggies and a granola bar) and mixing in more exercise (so instead of taking the bus home, I'll walk). That way things balance out a bit better for me.xoxo ~ Courtneyhttp://sartorialsidelines.blogspot.com

  3. I don't really eat when stressed out in fact if I'm nervous about something I tend not to eat. I've always been one of those types that can eat what ever and not put on weight and to a degree it is still the case. But I used to love having a day at the end of the week where I could just pig out on whatever i wanted, usually a sunday. But the rest of the week I'd eat a strict healthy diet.

  4. More than anything, when you are stressed you need to eat well. It's so hard because anxiety makes your brain seek a quick pick-me-up but really your body needs go nutrients and slow burning carbs to deal with the stress effectively. When I'm stressed I try and make proper meals, have bags of nuts to hand for snacking, drink peppermint tea and eat rice, pasta and cereal because I know my body needs it.I hope your stress subsides soon. Think of something positive to look forward to or start a new project that will make you feel good?x

  5. Oh, I hear ya! stress for me = ENDLESS jars of nutella and pizza. Sometimes Ramen (the cheap salty kind) I swear, it's like my mind thinks I will be relieved by all that sugar/fat/salt. But, lately I've had to be a LOT more cautious about these things. Mainly because of some health problems that arose, but… I can definitely relate. What I did this week was, every time I craved sweet… I ate half a banana and some tea with lots of agave [natural sweetener] If I wanted salt, I ate sea salted peanuts or fried kale. It sort of works, but yeah, I can't resist a good slice of fatty pizza. hahahaGood post!xo Fi
